What with the Yaman tapes all being worked on, hows about getting the A.W.O.L. tapes done?

It just so happens that late 1993 my mate got a hold of the DJ Randall / Dr. S Gachet double-pack and I gotta say, it was one of the best couple of music tapes i have ever heard! DJ Randall's mix was just... flawless!
(A constant level of aspiration for me - to mix like on that tape!)

I would like to get a hold of this because that copy went missing years ago.

In any case, track listings would be good even because there is infact a all time 'unknown' of mine that has been bugging me for years! At the very end of Dr. S Gachet's mix (the last tune of his set) there is this almost Deep Blue sounding thing with these deep chords and top-notch production on it. I have RARELY heard it since...
but I CAN TELL you that DJ Rap played it on one of those FIRST EVER Kiss F.M. jungle shows in 1994!
(You know, the ones that came on at 3am in the morning!!!???!??)

So... AWOL Tapes... Tracklistings... Please!!!

And to get the ball rolling....

A.W.O.L. - A Way Of Life - Live In London
DJ Hype & Darren Jay Double Pack
Saturday nth November 1993

This is a recording of the weekly underground drum and bass club night, AWOL, or as MC GQ refers to as, “the new style of hardcore”, and from my judgements and calculations it dates from around November time. A.W.O.L. regularly took place on Saturdays at The Paradise Club in Angel, Islington (which changed names to The Complex, and then became Blue Note, and is now demolished (?) and now a 'Carling Academy' resides in its place!?) but also ventured out to the Ministry Of Sound, and the SW1 club in Victoria. This night went on until 1pm Sunday afternoon – does that indicate that it was a special Ministry / SW1 night?

Blurb on the tape pack says:
“A SPECIAL THANKS TO THE FOLLOWING:
DJ CLARKEE, CREATIVE WAX, DARK HORSE, E, FACE, FORMATION, GAPPA G,
IRON PLATE, LEWCIFER, MOVING SHADOW, PRODUCTION HOUSE, DJ RON, RAM,
RENK, RUFF KUTT, SUB NATION, SUBURBAN BASE, SYNTHETIC, TEN INCH,
X AMOUNT CREW, X PROJECT, WHOSE MATERIAL IS FEATURED ON THIS TAPE."

DJ Hype - Live @ AWOL Nov 1993.mp3

This is a reasonably decent tape, but the mixing is a bit sloppy though.
Something interesting to listen out for is when MC GQ says:
“Wheel and come again please please pleeeeaaase! …absolutely ‘T’ for tremendous!”
…as sampled by DJ Hype in the tune “Roll The Beats”

(The two sides have been spliced together to allow for seamless play)

1. Uncle 22 & Navigator – 6 Million Ways To Die (DJ Hype Mix) [Ram]
2. Subnation – Scottie's Sub [Mercyless Recordings]
3. (unknown) - "...lordy bloody..." possibly a Ray Keith production…?
4. M Beat – Shuffle [Renk Records]
5. Metalheads – Saint Angel [Synthetic Hardcore Phonography]
6. The Full SP – S-Capaid [Face Records]
7. Lewi Cifer & Lloyd Don – Heat (Remix) [Miami Records]
8. Danny Breaks – DS#1A [Droppin’ Science]
9.Jimi Polo & Neil Vaas – Rolling Energy (2 Sinister Remix) [Dark Horse Records]
10. Oaysis – Open Secrets [Moving Shadow]
11. D'Cruze – Watch Out (Original) [Suburban Base]
12. Under Graduates – Into The Future (Massive Mix) [Camden Tunes]
13. DJ Hype – “The Chopper (Johnny Jungle Remix)” [The Joint]
14. (unknown - Dillinja?) - (miscellaneous dark amens...)
15. Sounds Of The Future – Fearless Wonder (Jimi Polo & Neil Vaas Remix) [Formation]
16. Dancemaster – Can't You Feel It [Grand Larceny]
17. Gappa G & Hyper Hypa – The Information Centre (DJ Hype Remix) [Ruff Kut Records]
18. DJ Hype – Dubplate Fever (DJ Hype 'Hyper!' Special) [Dubplate/Suburban Base]

Kenny Ken comes in…..

19. Dan-E & MC MC – Twilight Zone [Kikman Records]

Darren Jay - Live @ AWOL Nov 1993.mp3

Darren Jay starts off all guns blazing... But he loses momentum with his 4th selection, and is unable to get back into the groove again. All in all, a rather boring DJ set to listen to.

(The two sides have been spliced together to allow for seamless play)

1. Hardware – Night Stalker [Face Records]
2. Metronome – Warning [Serious Records]
3. Desired State – Beyond Bass [Ram Records]
4. (unknown - Dillinja?) - (same unknown tune as on DJ Hype’s tape)
5. Uncle 22 & Navigator – 6 Million Ways To Die (DJ Hype Mix) [Ram Records]
6. Metalheads – Saint Angel [Synthetic Hardcore Phonography]
7. Bounty Killaz - Voices [Creative Wax]
8. Gappa G & Hyper Hypa - Information Centre (DJ Ron Remix) [Ruff Kutt Records]
9. DJ Ron – African Chant [Roughtone Records]
10. Fusion – Love For The World (Remix) [Kemet Records]
11. DJ Solo – Axis (Remix) [Production House]
12. DJ Dextrous – The Victory [X Amount Crew]
13. Potential Bad Boy – Here We Come [Ibiza Records]
14. Potential Bad Boy – Set Me Free (Original) [Limited ‘E’ Edition]
15. Conquering Lion – Dub Plate Special (Ruff Kutt) [X Project]
16. Deep Blue – The Helicopter Tune (Fantasy #1) [Moving Shadow]

good start Ornette, you've got me interested in these now.

do you use soulseek? im in the process of downloading lots & lots of awol sets, its a goldmine for them.

will report back with some tracklistings & i think we will have to attempt to put some dates to sets.

Was Awol a weekly event? probably why there are so many sets!

I have swanne & randall late summer/autumn 92 ,that dr s gachet double pack from early 93 (which if euphoria was mixed in at the end of side 4 instead of the tape fading out would have been the best tape pack ever!!)
micky finn /gachet from aug bank hol 93, 1 tape of a kenny ken /randall back 2 back double pack from the same aug bank hol(had no tape cover) that hype/darren j pack and a kenny ken tape from spring 94 (no cover) but alass no randall/gachet tape.
would of liked it though.
