I was there almost every week in 1994, i remember Dred Bass Being dropped for the first time, also remember it was the first time i heard Burial by Leviticus as well. Used to send such a chill down my spine when Dred Bass would get a rewind and you hear the beginning of it, also the break in Andy C - Cool Down. not forgetting everytime they dropped General Levy - Incredible they would stop the tune right after he said "Yo" and everyone would just start to jump and then look stupid | ornette wrote: | | My group would regularily hang in the shadows towards the back-left of the arena, surrounding the large speaker to be found there |
Oh Yes, with Whitelocks punching holes in the walls for the rewind

I loved the Lazerdrome... really loved it, and was proud to be resident DJ. A venue from past, but it will be fondly remembered by many.
Shouts to:
Maria (manager)
Sonia & Sally (who looked after the DJs)
Fish (on the door)
And all the other DJs who appeared over the years... |

Ryan The owner made that place the legend it was (in its own right)
As for the lights and sound all credit go's to Smithy!
Ryan now owns scala ( down kings cross ) and again he has turned a shite venue into a Top spot to be @ the weekend. And yep the same go's for the lights and sound.
Comiserations & congratulations for keep on keeping on chaps!

Andy C was good at that period....... that is such a track & "roll on" on the flip if slightly over played. |

Still, I know lots of peeps here had good things to say about the place, and it's always sad to see another part of the history of our scene disappearing.

even the bouncer pissed himself laughing.

I almost put in a couple of paragraphs about this in the original writeup. During 1994 the atmosphere in Lazerdrome did take quite a turn for the worse. I think thats why I mentioned about people with white gloves and glow sticks - by 1994 they certainly wern't there anymore....
It has to be said that this 'moodyness' really did coincide with the MASSIVE surge of popluarity of jungle that occured during 1994, and unfortunately this same problem permiated the whole scene, and not just.... |
I said it before and ill said it again Jungle was really the death of Rave, the music was good but these bad bwoy muppets and atmosphere that came with it was shit

suffice to say... lazerdrome.. FUCK YEAH!.. i had 2 of the best years of my life going there religiously every saturday like the church of my hedonistic youth... my only regret is going there that one friday when they hired the place out for the "jungle vs ragga" night.. when the
guy got killed.. and it was right in front of me... that one thing pretty much ruined raving for me.. and has also put a cloud over every time i've gone out clubbing since... since i'm never totally relaxed and am always looking over one shoulder
c'est la vie

...Prior, the scene had always been a real multicultural one, with people of all race and creed participating in making the scene what it was. However with its rise in popularity so did it more become popular to a certain demographic of black inner-city youth that can be termed as 'rude boys'... |
Yes, exactly the same thing happened at the Roller Express as everywhere else in London. The
music was great, and the vibe exciting but maybe only because I was 16 at the time. If I was back there now I would probably have walked out of the scene, that whole screwface badboy thing seems so pathetic now.
I can't imagine anything like rave happening again in this country. There was alot of socialism in the rave scene. Nowadays it's all about the bling, the people that would be ravers are now chingy wannabe chavs. Very sad imo. |

I don't necessarily attribute it to ragga's either really, everyone got on in AWOL pretty well when it came to that score, I think crack was the major problem and maybe it unfortunately hit the ragga/jungle sect of Hardcore first, but crack didn't show no preference to skin color at that time. Great article though, very interesting read with excellent illustrations.

| I remember being in that place to be nearly every weekend for about 8 months either there or the Labyrinth, what a banging time the only difference was the Lab was Dark the Lazer was Deep with the wicked lazers that would knock yer tits off specially during the Upcommin Rushes from the many little fellas you'd downed on the way in, smashin it up with Balcony crew and then bouncin round for ten hours non stop Bangin Bais lines and top Djs me and the crew only had one bad expierence on the way home after one of the best nights for the guys I had introduced to the club was being met from some rudies on the back on the Train, sorry guys but should never show your wallet at 7 in the morning whilst waiting for train in London. but hey one time out of the many times we had been there, All I can say is Ladies you were all fine and loved up, and guys well what can I say well wicked always sorted or helping to get us all sorted. Massive place shame its gone well done to the guys who opened it and kept it going so long. and Dave thanks for telling me where to find the page. MC Fish who doubled as Security You r da Man |
